The album was recorded under the direction of Paul Harris in Woodstock, New York.. Two of the tracks feature the drumming of Levon Helm, from the Band – who had an influence on John Martyn's Genre: British folk rock.

   The album was cut in the summer of under the direction of Paul Harris. Joe Boyd rented John and Beverley a house in Woodstock. John felt that the album was just a little bit ahead of it’s time, saying “ a whole lot came from that record like people started using drum ideas and stuff, and nobody had really thought of using drums.

   John and Beverley Martyn were therefore signed up to Warner Brothers in America who sent them to Woodstock at the heigt of the folk-rock revolution. Working with The Doors and Crosby, Stills, Nash producer Paul Harris, they came up with the Stormbringer! album, a pace-setting acoustic rock adventure, with folk guitars filled out by pounding.
